How selling a junk car in Raleigh–Durham works

  1. Describe the car online

Fill in a short form with the year, make and model, whether it runs, the title and when you need it gone. Add photos, the mileage and the VIN if you can, because buyers who can see the car offer a price they can stand by. There is no phone call to make and nobody to wait on hold for.

  2. Let the buyers battle

Buyers around Raleigh–Durham who take cars from your ZIP send offers to your own offers page, each with the earliest time they can pick up. Your page shows the three who can come soonest beside the three who will pay the most, each offer shows the buyer's name and town, and you can message any of them through our site.

  3. Pick your winner and get paid

Choose the offer that suits you, whether that is the most cash, the soonest pickup or one near the top of both, and book that buyer's time or a later one they have open. The buyer tows the car for free and pays you the full amount when they collect it.

Elite Junk cars

4.8 Clayton

A small Clayton buyer in Johnston County that tends to show up fast, often within an hour, for old cars and minivans. Recent sellers called the price fair and the owner easy to deal with. It has only a short list of reviews and works from a home address, so there is less history here than at the bigger names.

Johnston Auto Salvage

4.5 Middlesex

Best known as a parts counter in Middlesex, out US 264 east of Raleigh, where staff pull parts for people who drive in from hours away. One seller a few years back sold a junk car here and got more than offers from online buyers like Peddle. That is the only sale in its reviews, so think of it as a parts yard that also buys.

T T & E Iron & Metal Inc

4.4 Garner

This busy Garner scrap yard mostly pays by weight for household and job-site metal. A couple of reviews show it buying cars too, one collected from a seller's house for cash and one driven in and paid within about 20 minutes. Long lines and a cramped yard draw complaints, so a whole car is a side job here.

R Stroud's Inc

4.0 Youngsville

Up in Youngsville in Franklin County, this yard pays for scrap metal by the pound and buys cars too. One recent first-time seller was happy with the price for a car and found the staff friendly. Most other reviews are about dropping off scrap, and work stops over lunch, so midday visits can mean a wait.

Raleigh Cash For Junk Cars

4.9 Raleigh

Nearly a decade of reviews describe this owner-run buyer in north Raleigh turning up within an hour or two, once on a Sunday evening when an HOA wanted a car gone that night. Sellers got the price agreed on the phone in cash, often more than other local junkers offered, for vans, an old Xterra and cars that had sat for years.

The Junk Car Lady

4.9 Raleigh

A woman-run buyer in north Raleigh that has taken a long line of junk and unwanted cars, often the same day or the next. Past sellers say the phone price held when she saw the car, cash was paid on the spot and the title and bill of sale were done right. One got more for an old Xterra than a dealer offered on trade.

Cash For Cars

5.0 Garner

South of Garner, this small buyer has picked up old and broken-down cars the same day, once on Easter and once within the hour for two dead vehicles at the same house. Recent sellers say the owner paid cash on the spot and towed for free. All of its reviews come from about the last year, so its track record is short.

Martin's Auto Salvage, Inc.

4.3 Raleigh

Mostly a pick-your-part yard on the east side of Raleigh, but it buys whole cars too. A few sellers got a fair price for a wrecked or unneeded car, with the truck there within a day and a check in hand. Those good reports are several years old, and one older review says the quote dropped at pickup, so the record is thin.

Jackson Auto Salvage

4.1 Raleigh

This self-serve parts yard in southeast Raleigh also runs a cash-for-cars side under its own name. Its reviews are nearly all about parts and used tires, with only a couple of people saying they scrapped a van or sold a junk truck here. The counter draws frequent complaints about rude service, so expect a bare-bones yard rather than a polished buyer.

You might be wondering

How fast can a Raleigh–Durham buyer pick up my car?

Every offer says the earliest time that buyer can come, and your offers page shows the fastest pickup near the top, so the quickest Raleigh–Durham buyers are easy to spot. If you tell us you need it gone today, the list starts with the soonest pickups. You book the buyer's time or a later one they have open, up to a week ahead, so you can pick the time that suits you.

Can I call the Raleigh–Durham buyers listed here?

We don't list their phone numbers. Enter your ZIP and the buyers who cover it send offers to your offers page, so you compare prices side by side instead of calling yard after yard. Once you pick one, calls go through our number, so neither side's number is handed out.

What do I need to sell a junk car in North Carolina?

Take your plates off when you sell. Turn them in at any NC license plate agency unless you are moving them to another car you own. Turn in the plate before you cancel the car's insurance, or you can face fines. North Carolina titles must be signed in front of a notary. If the sold car still shows on your NC DMV record, you can file form MVR-46F, notarized, to have it marked cancelled. If your car is 12 model years old or older, a salvage yard or metal recycler can buy it without a title if you show photo ID and sign a seller statement. If you can't find the title, say so on the form and message buyers before you choose, because some can still take the car.

How does BeaterBoss work?

Tell us about your car, your ZIP code and when you need it gone. Screened local junk car buyers send cash offers, and each one says the earliest time that buyer can pick up. Your offers page shows the top offer and the fastest pickup up front, and you pick the buyer you want.

What do Top, Fastest and Best of both mean?

Top is the biggest offer on your car. Fastest is the buyer who can pick it up soonest. Best of both marks an offer that is among the three biggest and the three soonest at once. They only point things out, so you can still choose any offer you like.

Do I need photos, the mileage or the VIN?

No, but the more you add, the more accurate your offers. Buyers price a car from what they can see, so photos of the front, the back, the dashboard showing the mileage (with the engine running, if it runs), the inside, any damage and the VIN plate let them offer a price they can stand by when they arrive. The VIN is on the dashboard by the windshield, or on the driver's door frame. Please don't add a photo of the title: it shows your address.

Is it free for sellers?

Yes. It costs you nothing to get offers or sell. Buyers pay us a fee only when they win your car, and it is on top of their offer, never taken out of it.

Will I get a lot of phone calls?

No. Offers arrive on your own offers page and we text you when they do. Buyers never get your phone number, not even the one you choose: calls go through our number.

Can I sell my car without a title?

Often, yes. Many buyers accept cars without a title if you can show ID and proof of ownership. Rules vary by state, and the offer may be lower.

What if the buyer lowers the price at pickup?

You can say no. The offer you accepted is the price. Tell us on your offers page and we will step in.

Why isn't a Raleigh–Durham business I found on Google listed?

It may not have met our bar, which is a 4.0 or better Google rating, usually from at least 10 reviews, and signs that the business actually buys vehicles. We also leave out call centers and listings named after search keywords.

Why are some buyers shown first?

Buyers who make offers through BeaterBoss are shown first, because you can get their price here without a phone call. They pay us a fee only when you pick them and they pick up the car; you never pay anything. Everyone else is shown in a different order on every visit, so no one is stuck at the top or the bottom.
