What you need to sell a junk car in Rhode Island
- Cancel your registration with the RI DMV when you sell, to avoid excise taxes and insurance fines. If you cancel online, you can destroy or recycle the plates.
- If your car is a 2001 or newer, sign the back of the title as the seller and write in the current mileage.
- The RI DMV says to give the buyer a signed bill of sale with the year, make, model, VIN, color, price and your address.
- For a 2000 or older car first registered to you before 2024, give the buyer a bill of sale and proof of ownership, like an old registration.
- Lost your title? Duplicates are handled only at RI DMV headquarters in Cranston, using Form TR-2/TR-9.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the RI DMV has the final word.
