NO TITLE?
How to sell a junk car without a title
A lost title does not have to end the sale. In 16 of the 46 states we cover, a licensed yard can buy an older junk car without one, and in the rest a replacement title is a form and a small fee away. Here is what each state allows, from its own rules.
Your three options
Sell to a licensed yard without it
In 16 states a licensed salvage yard, recycler or scrap processor can buy an older junk car without the title. You usually show your ID and sign a statement or a state form saying the car is yours and has no loan on it, and the car is never titled again. Each state sets its own age limit, and some add a price limit or require that the car does not run.
Use a form or your registration
In 5 states a form stands in for a lost title, such as a certificate from the state or an affidavit. And 8 states do not title older cars at all, so the registration or a bill of sale is your proof that you own it.
Get a replacement title
Every state will replace a lost title for the owner on record. Among those that list a fee it runs from $2 to $60, and some print it the same day. In 20 states we found no other way round a lost title, so this is where to start there.
The rules, state by state
Checked October 2026 against each state's own pages, statutes and forms. Pick your state for its full rules on selling a junk car.
"Model years" counts back from the current model year, the way each state's rule is written. A limit on price is the most the buyer may pay. Rules change, so the state's agency has the final word; each state's page lists its sources.
What a yard will ask for
When a licensed yard buys a car without a title, the state makes it check who you are and that the car is yours to sell. The details differ, but in most states you can expect the same few things.
- Your driver's license or state ID, which the yard copies or records.
- A signed statement or form saying you have the right to sell the car and that no loan is recorded on it. In several states lying on it is a crime.
- The VIN, so the yard can check that the car is not reported stolen before it is crushed.
- Sometimes payment by check rather than cash, and a wait of a few business days before the car is crushed.
- An understanding that the car can never be titled again: it is sold for parts or scrap only.
If there is still a loan on it
Nearly every way round a missing title requires that no loan is recorded on the car. If you paid one off, the lender's release lets you get a replacement title or sign the state's form. If a loan is still open, the lender holds the title, and the sale has to go through them.
Selling without a title on BeaterBoss
Our offer form asks whether you have the title, so every buyer sees your answer before making an offer. Buyers in states that allow it can still offer on a car without one, and you can message any buyer through your offers page to ask what they need before you choose.

Questions sellers ask
Can you sell a junk car without a title?
Often, yes. In 16 of the 46 states we cover, a licensed salvage yard, recycler or scrap processor can buy an older junk car without the title, with a signed statement or a state form instead. In 5 more, a form stands in for a lost title, and 8 states do not title older cars at all. Everywhere else you can get a replacement title first.
How old does a car have to be to sell it for scrap without a title?
It depends on the state: 8 model years in New York, 10 in Florida, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Virginia, 12 in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina and South Carolina, 13 in Texas, 20 in Maine and 25 in Arkansas. Some states add a price limit or require that the car does not run, and Louisiana sets no age at all for a car that cannot run and is worth most as scrap.
How much does a replacement title cost?
Among the states that list a fee, from $2 in Texas to $60 in New Jersey. Some states print it the same day at a local office, and others mail it in a few weeks.
Can I sell a junk car with just a bill of sale?
Only in some cases. Arkansas accepts a bill of sale for a car at least 25 years old sold for scrap, and states that do not title older cars (Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont) sell those cars on the registration or a bill of sale. Elsewhere a bill of sale alone is not enough.
What will the buyer need from me?
Expect to show a driver's license or state ID and to sign a statement that the car is yours to sell and has no loan on it. Some states require the buyer to pay by check and to wait a few business days before crushing the car, and a car sold this way can never be titled again.
