What you need to sell a junk car in Delaware
- PlatesThey stay on the car
- Signing the titleNo notary needed
- Reporting the saleRequired
- In Delaware the plate stays with the car when you sell it, unless you put it into retention at a DMV office first. Bring your Delaware title to do that.
- Turn your plates in to the Delaware DMV before you cancel your insurance. You can mail them with a note saying the car was junked.
- Delaware titles do not need a notary. Fill in section 1 on the back with the buyer's name and address, sale date, price and mileage.
- Fill out the Seller's Report of Sale at the bottom of your title and mail it to the Delaware DMV, or drop it off, as soon as possible.
- Lost the title? Apply for a duplicate with form MV213. The fee is $50.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
