- PlatesYou take them off
- Reporting the saleOptional
- Take your plates off before the car leaves. In Colorado, plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle.
- Sign and print your name in the seller section exactly as it appears on the front of the title.
- If your Colorado title has a space for a notary, have it notarized or fill out form DR 2445 instead.
- Within 5 days, you may report the sale with Report Release of Liability on myDMV. It removes you from liability for what the buyer does after the sale.
- Lost your title? Request a duplicate on myDMV, at your county motor vehicle office, or by mail with form DR 2539A.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
