New Mexico rules
What you need to sell a junk car in New Mexico
- PlatesYou take them off
- Reporting the saleRequired
- New Mexico plates belong to you, not the car, so take the plate off before the car leaves.
- Within 30 days, take the plate to the NM MVD to be destroyed, or have it put on another vehicle of the same class.
- Sign the title over and fill in the buyer's name, the sale date, the price and the odometer reading.
- State law says you must tell the NM MVD about the sale. Mail the Notice of Vehicle Sold form (MVD-10048) to the MVD Sold Unit.
- If you lost the title, you can apply for a duplicate as the registered owner using form MVD-10901.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the NM MVD has the final word.
