What you need to sell a junk car in Illinois

- Take your plates off the car. Illinois law says to send them to the Illinois Secretary of State or have them moved to another vehicle you own.
- Sign the title over to the buyer and give it to them when they take the car.
- On the title, fill in the sale date, your printed name and signature, and the buyer's printed name and address.
- Lost your title? You can apply to the Illinois Secretary of State for a duplicate. The fee is $50.
- A licensed scrap processor cannot take your car without proof of ownership, such as the title or a junking certificate, and two forms of ID from you.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
