What you need to sell a junk car in Indiana

  • Take your plates off when you sell. The Indiana BMV does not need them back, and you can move them to another vehicle you own.
  • If you throw a plate away, make it unreadable and unusable first.
  • Every owner on the title signs and prints their name in the seller section. Also fill in the odometer reading, sale date, price and buyer's details.
  • Lost your title? Order a duplicate from the Indiana BMV online through myBMV, at a branch or kiosk, or by mail for $15.
  • With a lost title, you can apply to the Indiana BMV for a Certificate of Authority, which lets you sell the car to a salvage recycler for scrap.
  • Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
