What you need to sell a junk car in New York

- Take your plates and windshield registration sticker off before the sale. Unless you move the plates to another car, turn them in to the New York DMV.
- Turn in your plates before you cancel your insurance. If you do not, the New York DMV will suspend your registration and can suspend your license.
- A New York title does not need to be notarized when you sign it over to the buyer.
- You sign the transfer section on the back of the title and a bill of sale, form MV-912.
- Lost the title? If your car is at least eight model years old and worth $1,250 or less, you can sell it to a DMV-registered dismantler using form MV-35.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
