New Jersey rules
What you need to sell a junk car in New Jersey
- PlatesYou take them off
- Take your plates off and turn them in at any New Jersey MVC agency, unless you are moving them to another car you own.
- Keep the MVC's plate surrender receipt in case any charges are later linked to those plates.
- Sign the seller's section on the back of the title and give it to the buyer.
- Give the buyer a bill of sale with their name and address, the sale date, the odometer reading and the price.
- If you lost the title, you can get a duplicate at a New Jersey MVC Vehicle Center for $60 with form OS/SS-UTA.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the New Jersey MVC has the final word.
