Maryland rules
What you need to sell a junk car in Maryland
- PlatesYou take them off
- Your plates stay with you, not the car, so take them off before the buyer takes it.
- If the car will be scrapped, Maryland law says to send the plates and registration card to the MVA right away, unless you move the plates to another car.
- Keep your car insurance active until the Maryland MVA gives you a tag return receipt.
- On the back of the title, write the buyer's name and address, the price, the mileage and the sale date, then sign it.
- Lost your title? Ask the Maryland MVA for a duplicate before you sell, on myMVA if your car qualifies, at a branch or by mail.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the Maryland MVA has the final word.
