What you need to sell a junk car in Vermont
- PlatesYou take them off
- Take your plates off before the car leaves. The Vermont DMV does not require you to return them.
- Every owner listed on the title must sign it over to the buyer.
- If your car is a 2009 or older and registered in your name, you may not need a title. Give the buyer your registration and a signed bill of sale.
- Lost your title? You can ask the Vermont DMV for a replacement online, by mail or at an office.
- If your car has been salvaged, rebuilt or totaled, you must tell the buyer before the sale, out loud and in writing on the bill of sale.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
