Massachusetts rules
What you need to sell a junk car in Massachusetts
- Reporting the saleRequired
- Your registration ends when you sell the car. You can move it and your plates to another vehicle you own through the Massachusetts RMV.
- When you hand over the car, sign the title over to the buyer and write in the actual odometer reading.
- Massachusetts law says to return your registration certificate to the Massachusetts RMV right away, with the sale date and the buyer's name and address.
- Lost your title? Apply to the Massachusetts RMV for a duplicate.
- A yard that takes your car to junk it must send the title, or other proof of ownership the RMV requires, to the RMV within 10 days.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the Massachusetts RMV has the final word.
