What you need to sell a junk car in Michigan

- Take your plate off before the buyer takes the car. The plate stays with you, and you can move it to another car you own.
- Fill in the seller's part of the title with the exact mileage, your name, address and signature, and the buyer's name and address.
- Michigan law says you must either go with the buyer to a Secretary of State office or keep a record of the sale for at least 18 months.
- Michigan law says a business that buys a car from you for scrap or parts must receive your signed title.
- Lost your title? The Michigan Secretary of State sells a duplicate online or at an office for $15, or $20 for a same-day title at an office.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
