What you need to sell a junk car in Washington

  • PlatesYou take them off
  • Signing the titleNo notary needed
  • Reporting the saleWithin 5 days
  • Take your plates off before the car leaves. The buyer can't use them, but you can move them to another car of the same kind or turn them in.
  • Sign the title to release your interest. A signature on the title itself does not need a notary.
  • File a Report of Sale with the Washington DOL within 5 days, even if the car goes to a wrecking yard. You can file it online.
  • You and the buyer both sign a bill of sale, unless the sale price and date are written on the title.
  • Lost your title? The Affidavit of Loss/Release of Interest can stand in for it, but it must be notarized or signed in front of a vehicle licensing agent.
  • Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.

Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the Washington DOL has the final word.
