What you need to sell a junk car in Louisiana
- PlatesYou take them off
- Signing the titleA notary is needed
- Reporting the saleOptional
- Louisiana law says plates come off when your use of them ends. The Louisiana OMV can move a plate to a vehicle that replaces this one.
- Sign the title over to the buyer in front of a notary. The Louisiana OMV also accepts the sale if the bill of sale is notarized.
- You can tell the Louisiana OMV you sold the car through its online Notice of Vehicle Transfer. Your record is flagged right away.
- Lost your title? Apply to the Louisiana OMV for a duplicate on the Vehicle Application (DPSMV1799), with its duplicate title affidavit notarized.
- If the car cannot run and is worth most as scrap, a licensed dismantler or scrap metal processor can take a signed affidavit from you instead of a title.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the Louisiana OMV has the final word.
