Kansas rules
What you need to sell a junk car in Kansas
- PlatesYou take them off
- Signing the titleNo notary needed
- Reporting the saleOptional
- Take your plate off the car when you sell it. The Kansas Division of Vehicles says to always remove plates from a vehicle you have sold.
- Kansas does not require a notary on most title assignments. A lien release does need to be notarized.
- You can file a Seller's Notification of Sale (TR-216) to take your name off the vehicle record.
- If you turn in or transfer your plate at the county treasurer's office, the sold car no longer shows you as owner, so the TR-216 is not needed.
- Lost your title? If there is no lien, apply for a duplicate with form TR-720B at any county treasurer's motor vehicle office or by mail. The fee is $10.
- Federal law: if your car is a 2011 or newer, write the mileage on the title when you sign it. A 2010 or older car is exempt.
Checked October 2026 against the official sources below. Rules change, so if anything here does not match your situation, the Kansas Division of Vehicles has the final word.
